Meet Mary Beth

Roots & Roost, Co. began with a lifelong love of finding beauty in unexpected places.

The name Roots & Roost came from my own journey.

Roots are where we come from—our family, our history, and the people and places that shape us. Roost is where we gather, where life happens, and where new stories are created.

To me, every antique is a little bit of both. Each piece carries the roots of another family—their celebrations, traditions, and everyday moments—and then finds a new roost where new memories can be made.

I grew up on the South Side of Chicago and spent summers on a lake in Michigan, where my Ma and my Nannie taught me an important lesson early in life: you never pass a garage sale, flea market, or antique shop without stopping. They taught me how to spot a treasure long before I knew the word “vintage.”

But more importantly, they taught me that the things we surround ourselves with tell our stories.

I grew up in a home filled with family photographs, Auntie Kay’s handmade afghans, dishes at the table when friends and family stopped by, and the good silver that came out not just for special occasions, but because everyday moments were worth celebrating. Those pieces weren’t just decorations—they carried memories, connection, and history.

Years later, when my husband and I raised our three children in California, far from my family in Chicago, I wanted our home to feel the same way.

We filled our spaces with pieces that had meaning: my husband’s grandfather’s wooden trunk in our son’s room, my Ma’s china on the table for holidays (and Tuesdays), my Nannie’s silver used regularly because beautiful things are meant to be enjoyed. My dad’s Chicago firefighter boots, after 43 years with the department, still stand proudly by our front door, right next to cowboy boots, football cleats, and house slippers.

Our home was never perfect, and it was never staged like a showroom.

But it was always full of stories.

After more than 20 years working in education on the West Coast, life eventually brought us to Colorado. We traded city life for a hay farm in the mountains, added more animals than I care to count, and somewhere along the way my passion for treasure hunting and restoring furniture became something much bigger.

Roots & Roost, Co. was born in 2023.

I didn’t want to simply sell antiques. I wanted to preserve the stories behind them.

Today, I have the privilege of working with families who are passing along pieces that have been loved for generations. Sometimes it’s because they’re downsizing. Sometimes they’re moving. Sometimes they’re saying goodbye to a loved one.

Every piece comes with a story, and it is one of the greatest honors of my life when a family trusts me to help that story continue in a new home.

Because antiques aren’t just old furniture. They are pieces of someone’s life.

Why I Do What I Do

People often ask if this job is fun.

It is.

It is also one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

There are heavy pieces, dusty spaces, endless boxes, and plenty of moments when I wonder if that cabinet really looked quite that heavy in the photos. There are days filled with exciting discoveries and days filled with uncertainty.

But then I meet the people. The person who tells me about their grandmother’s dining table. The family who shares the history of a treasured piece. The vendor at an antique market who tells a story that stays with me for years.

Those moments are why I’m here. I don’t just sell antiques. I help connect people to history, family, and one another.

I’m incredibly grateful for the families who trust me with their stories, the community that has supported this dream, and my husband and three kids who have hauled furniture, loaded trucks, joined buying trips, and cheered me on every step of the way.

Roots & Roost, Co. has never really been about the pieces themselves.

It’s about the people who loved them, the memories they hold, and the stories they carry forward.

The furniture, silver, artwork, and treasures are simply the connection between generations.
