Enhance your home decor with this striking, authentic 1903 architectural line illustration by noted British artist and illustrator Nelly Erichsen (1862–1918). Originally created as a featured plate for the classic Edwardian travel diary, The Story of Siena and San Gimignano published in London by J.M. Dent & Co., this antique print beautifully preserves the romance of medieval Italy.
Titled Porta Romana, Siena, the piece captures a dramatic street-level view of the massive 14th-century Roman Gate in Siena, Tuscany. Erichsen features an intricately detailed scene of local Italian life, complete with an oxcart team passing through the towering double-arched gateway beneath fortified battlements. The composition showcases masterful cross-hatch ink shading and holds the artist's distinct, stylized "NE" monogram visible along the bottom center edge.
This beautiful monochrome illustration is presented behind a clean white matting and housed inside an exquisite heavy Baroque Revival style gilt frame. Decorated with deeply molded scrolling acanthus leaves and delicate floral patterns, the ornate gold frame displays a rich vintage patina that provides a luxurious museum-quality border for the artwork.
