Acquire an exceptional work of early 20th-century sacred art with this authentic, rare French bronze cradle medal. Masterfully designed in the distinctive French Art Deco style by the acclaimed sculptor and medalist Élie Pellegrin, this heavy cast medallion features a deep, high-relief portrait of the Virgin Mary gazing lovingly down upon the Infant Jesus. The design is framed by the striking Latin raised inscription reading: "ECCE FILIUS MEUS" ("Behold My Son").
Dating from the 1920s to the 1930s, large religious medallions of this form were traditionally blessed and suspended with ribbons above a newborn's crib or cradle as a token of spiritual protection and family devotion. The piece features its original geometric triangular suspension loop securely fixed at the top apex. Signed in relief on the reverse by the artist, it stands as a premier investment piece for collectors of fine Catholic antiquities, French sacred goldsmithing, and Art Deco cast bronze reliefs.
Condition Report (Excellent Vintage State):
- Surface Patina: Exceptional vintage condition, exhibiting a rich, deeply golden-bronze and chocolate-brown natural aged patina. High points display subtle rub wear that accentuates the exquisite anatomical relief work.
- Structure: Completely intact solid bronze casting. The top integrated triangular hanging bail loop is sturdy, solid, and aligned straight.
- Reverse Side: Features the artist's authentic relief casting signature (É. Pellegrin) along the flat back face.
Approximate Dimensions:
- Diameter: ~2.75 inches (7 cm)
- Total Height (including top loop): ~3.25 inches
