Oil-Colored Print of Colonial Man in Africa

1843 oil-color printing by George Baxter of Scottish missionary, Rev. Robert Moffat, near the Kuruman River in South Africa.  In the background is Khama III, known as Chief of Bechuana, addressing his people expecting the arrival of a the missionary. Khama III ruled the Ngwato (Bamangwato) people for nearly five decades, bringing stability and ending internal divisions and kept working relations with the British government 

Baxter patented a distinctive printing technique that involved engraving the main lines of the drawing onto a metal plate, followed by the application of blocks with oil-based inks to add color.

Wooden frame with painted finish. The frame exhibits wear consistent with its age, including some chipped edges, while the paint remains well-preserved.
