A Spectacular Survival!
Acquire a remarkable, fully complete specimen of early 19th-century European publishing with this rare 1804 first edition, two-volume set of La Farsaglia. Written by the ancient Roman poet Lucan (Anneo Lucano) and beautifully translated into Italian verse by Cristoforo Boccella, this complete set was printed in Pisa by the Tipografia della Società Letteraria in MDCCCIV (1804).
What makes this set an extraordinary find for antiquarian book collectors is its untouched structural state. Both Tomo Primo (Volume 1) and Tomo Secondo (Volume 2) remain entirely untrimmed with raw, deckled edges and are housed in their original 1804 publisher’s temporary paper wrappers, secured by elegant, aged sage green velvet ribbon ties. Volume 1 features its authentic historical handwriting identification across the spine, grounding the pair beautifully. During this era, books were sold in these temporary soft bindings so that affluent buyers could custom-bind them to match their personal private libraries. To find a complete set untouched, un-cut, and beautifully preserved together for over two centuries is an absolute rarity.
Dimensions: 20" H x 8.25" W x 2.25 Depth
Condition Report:
This complete set is in very good historic condition. The interior pages of both volumes are remarkably clean, bright, and structurally sound, showing only very mild age-toning and minimal historic foxing. Volume 1 is exceptionally well-preserved. The original temporary exterior paper wrappers show authentic, heavy distressing, rubbing, and edge-fraying consistent with a 220-year-old paper defense layer. The text blocks are thick, heavy, and securely bound. A spectacular survivor.
